Pranayama (Breath Control):
Regulation of the breath to control(ayama) the life force (prana). It's the fourth limb among the Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, described in Patanjali's Yog Sutra.
“Tasmin sati ลvฤsa-praลvฤsayor gati-vicchedaแธฅ prฤแนฤyฤmaแธฅ”
Once posture is stable, we begin working with the breath: slowing it, pausing it, and controlling it consciously. One can master life energy (prana) by mastering the breath.
This is how Patanjali explains pranayama, which is the deliberate stopping of inhalation and exhalation. Increased power and mental clarity result from the practice’s deepening of concentration, mental calmness, and nervous system purification.
“Tataแธฅ kแนฃฤซyate prakฤลa ฤvaraแนam”
Then (through pranayama), the veil covering the inner light is destroyed.
By regulating the breath, prฤแนฤyฤma purifies the nฤแธฤซs (energy channels), dissolves restlessness, and steadies the wandering mind. In this stillness, the subtle barriers of ignorance (avidyฤ), doubt, and distraction fade away, revealing the brilliance of the inner Self.
Pranayama removes the mental and energetic blocks that hide the true Self or inner light (prakฤsha). As the breath harmonizes,this leads to enhanced clarity, perception, and inner vision — a kind of inner Siddhi.
“Prayatna-ลaithilya-ananta-samฤpattibhyฤm”
By relaxation of effort and merging with the infinite, perfection in asana is achieved. Here, merging with the infinite (ananta) hints touching a state where you feel completely boundless — beyond limits of body, time, or mind. It’s like realizing you’re not just a drop, but the whole ocean. In this experience, the ego dissolves and what remains is pure freedom, joy, and inner mastery.
This isn’t about becoming something new, but uncovering what’s always been there — your true Self, vast and limitless. It brings deep peace, fearlessness, and a sense of being one with everything. The experience of a boundless state of being, which is a spiritual realization, often considered a subtle siddhi (self-mastery, bliss, and transcendence).
